How to Start Your Day on a SNO-GO in Buttermilk

Buttermilk is known for its welcoming, beginner-friendly terrain, making it a great choice for new SNO-GO riders. Here’s a guide to the best access points, tips on lifts, and a few important rules to ensure you have a smooth day on the mountain.

Main Base Area – Summit Express Lift
For direct access to Buttermilk’s main slopes, start at the Summit Express Lift near the main base area. This lift provides a convenient way to explore Buttermilk’s gentle, beginner-friendly runs, perfect for getting comfortable on your SNO-GO bike.

Beginner Option – Panda Peak Lift
If you’re feeling nervous or are a true beginner, the Panda Peak Lift is a great starting point. This small lift services an easy, dedicated beginner area, where you can practice your balance, turning, and control before moving to larger runs.

Parking and Access Rules
Buttermilk offers ample parking, so finding a spot should be easy. However, be mindful of the gate rules when entering the slopes:

  • When entering the gates, only the right gate in the second set is wide enough to accommodate a SNO-GO bike. If you’re with multiple riders, one person can lift their bike over the gate, or you can go through one at a time in the right gate—just keep the flow moving.

Tips for Your Ski Bike Rental at Buttermilk

Make the most of your SNO-GO rental at Buttermilk with these practical tips! Whether you're new to snow biking at Buttermilk or a seasoned rider, these pointers will help you ride with confidence and enjoy one of Colorado's most beginner-friendly mountains.

  • Wear the right gear. SNO-GOs require snowboard boots—ski boots are not compatible. Wear waterproof winter clothing, insulated gloves, goggles, and a properly fitted helmet.

  • Always wear your leash. Before every run, attach the SNO-GO leash to your wrist. This prevents the bike from sliding away if you fall and is required for your safety.

  • Give yourself extra space on the chairlift. Your SNO-GO counts as a person, so don't load a full chair. On a 4-person chair, ride with no more than two other people, especially while you're learning.

  • Keep your weight over the front ski. The biggest beginner mistake is leaning back. Lean your chest over the handlebars and put plenty of weight on the front ski for better steering and control.

  • Tilt the handlebars—don't turn them. SNO-GOs carve by tilting the handlebars, not by steering them like a bicycle. Exaggerate the lean so your ski edges stay aligned through the turn and help prevent the front ski from catching.

  • Stay low and ride aggressively. Keep your knees bent, elbows bent, and your center of gravity low. A low, athletic stance gives you much better balance and control than standing upright.

  • Start on the beginner terrain. Buttermilk is one of the best mountains in Colorado to learn on. Take a few laps off Summit Express before progressing to longer green and blue runs.

  • Take a break at the base area. Grab lunch or warm up at Buttermilk Base Lodge before heading back out for more runs.

By following these tips, you'll be ready to explore Buttermilk Ski Resort with confidence. Book your SNO-GO rental at Buttermilk today and experience one of Colorado's best mountains for beginner and intermediate riders.

Tips for Bringing Your
Own SNO-GO to Buttermilk Mountain

Drop off your SNO-GO before parking. If you're parking in the Buttermilk parking lots, unload your SNO-GO near the Buttermilk Base Lodge before parking. This saves you from carrying your ski bike across the parking lot and makes getting to the lifts much easier. Do not leave your vehicle unattended—drop off the bike, then return to park.

Bring a bike lock. Lock your SNO-GO to the ski racks while you're inside the lodge or taking a break.

Riding multiple days? Lock your SNO-GO up overnight. Leave your ski bike securely locked at

Buttermilk Ski Resort so you don't have to transport it back and forth each day.

Always lock it to a ski rack on pavement. Never lock your SNO-GO in the snow. It interferes with resort operations and can create issues with mountain staff. Always use a ski rack located on pavement.

Check every bolt before riding. Pay close attention to the control arm bolts and center axle bolt. Loose bolts can eventually fail. We recommend using blue Loctite on all bolts to help prevent them from backing out.

Carry a compact tool kit. A small mountain bike multi-tool, Allen keys, stubby wrenches, and spare control arm bolts, pins, and hardware can save your day. A small frame bag or handlebar bag is a great way to keep everything with your SNO-GO.
